PRISM international publishes exciting, original material from established and emerging writers in Canada and around the world. We accept submissions year-round. Due to the high volume of submissions we receive each month, reply times range between 2 to 6 months, depending on the time of year.

Please note: PRISM does not accept submissions from current or incoming students or faculty of the University of British Columbia’s Creative Writing Program (this includes the UBC Optional-Residency MFA Program). Work submitted by incoming students prior to their acceptance to the UBC Creative Writing Program, if still under consideration, must be withdrawn. In order to submit, UBC alumni cannot have taken a UBC Creative Writing Program course during the previous two years.

  • For contest entries, please refer to our contest page.
  • Send original, unpublished material in short fiction, translation (into English), literary non-fiction, and drama. We do not consider work that has appeared on the internet unless it has only been posted to writers’ forums for discussion.
  • Include a brief cover letter with a short bio and publications list. Please specify the genre of your submission in the cover letter.
  • If you have submitted your work to another magazine for consideration, please let us know in the cover letter.
  • We will reply to online submissions via email.
  • Along with your submission, please provide complete contact information.
  • Manuscripts must be typed and double-spaced (in the case of prose) on letter-sized paper. We prefer PDFs for online submissions, but will also accept Word documents.
  • Send only one genre at a time — one story per submission, unless you are submitting flash fiction or non-fiction (under 1000 words), in which case you can submit up to three pieces in a single document. Maximum submission length is 25 pages (6,250 words), though shorter work is often easier to place.
  • Please send only one submission per three-month period.
  • We do not accept email submissions.
  • Non-fiction pieces should be creative, exploratory, or experimental in tone. Accompanying photographs will be considered for publication. We do not publish rhetorical, academic, or journalistic non-fiction.
  • We do not publish genre writing such as romance, horror, or science fiction. Please read back issues of PRISM as a guideline.
  • Translations are sought in all genres and must be undertaken with the permission of the original author or be considered works in the public domain. Wherever possible, include a copy of the original work. We are an English-language publication, and, as such, accept translations of work into English.
  • We purchase first North American serial rights, and pay $30/printed page for prose. Contributors will also receive two copies of the issue in which their work appears.
